INDY WEBMASTER:
First off i will start with some basics. What made you decide to
become a pro wrestler?
BOOMER:
-Ever since I was like 5 years old I loved pro wrestling. I was the type of
kid that on Saturday mornings I would be in front of the television watching
wrestling instead of cartoons. I never read comic books instead I would read
wrestling magazines.
INDY WEBMASTER:
who trained you to wrestle?
BOOMER:
I paid my money to train at United States Championship Wrestling, but mostly
got most of my training second hand from what Bill Comer would learn from
PWX. He showed me the proper way to execute moves.
INDY WEBMASTER:
how long have you been wrestling?
BOOMER:
-This will be my seventh year in wrestling.
INDY WEBMASTER:
who was your first match against and where?
BOOMER:
-My first match was on October 11, 1995 at the Woody Williams Armory in
Fairmont, West Virginia. It was a tag team match pitting Death Row vs. Pure
Country for the USCW Tag Team titles.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what if anything do you do mentally to prepare for a match ,
especially if it is going to be a hardcore weapons type match?
BOOMER:
-That is a tough one. If the match has been built properly and there is a
big crowd it is really easy to prepare for the match. I get so excited I am
pacing in the locker room and can't wait for my entrance music to hit. Other
times I am sitting in the locker room as my entrance music is playing.
INDY WEBMASTER:
who is your biggest influence ?
BOOMER:
-The most obvious is Mick Foley. I mean ever since the first time I watched
him on television I knew that there was something special about him.
Although growing up I idolized so many superstars and they all influenced me.
I still get influenced from guys that I wrestle. Samu and Sandman have been
big influences.
INDY WEBMASTER:
who is your favorite wrestler to watch in the indies?
BOOMER:
-There are so many but if I had to pick one I would have to say Christopher
Daniels. The guy is simply amazing and probably the best "indy" worker I
have ever seen.
INDY WEBMASTER:
in the wwf?
BOOMER:
-Well since Foley is gone I wouild have to say Steve Austin. Not just "Stone
Cold" but also "Stunning" Steve Austin. He has taken professional wrestling
to a whole new level.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what is the best (if you can pick one)fed that you have worked for
and why?
BOOMER:
-There have been so many good ones and there have also been a ton of crappy
ones. In Pittsburgh I would have to say IWC is the best. Not knocking other
promotions because there are good ones and they do a great job but IWC has a
complete package. Outside of Pittsburgh I would have to say that there is a
tie. WXW in Allentown is a class act and WPW out of Florida is also tops in
my book.
INDY WEBMASTER:
who (if you can pick one ) is you favorite opponient?
BOOMER:
-Quinn Magnum has to be at the top of the list and not far behind is Crusher
Hanson and Shirley Doe. All of these guys are awesome in their own way and
have carried me to some great matches.
INDY WEBMASTER:
your favorite tag partner?
BOOMER:
-This is also a close one but I would have to say Jimmy Vegas. Punchy McGee
and Crusher Hanson are a close second and third. All three guys are great in
my book.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what different feds have you wrestled for?
BOOMER:
-There are so many that I have worked for that I would say to check out my
website. It lists just about every one that I have worked for.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what titles have you held?
BOOMER:
-Same thing I have listed them on my website.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what wrestler that you have not wrestled would you like to wrestle
and why ?
BOOMER:
-My dream match would be against Mick Foley as Cactus Jack. I would
definitely be out classed but when you are against the "King of the Death
Match" you could only hope to keep up. It would be my last match ever
because I would try and take every super bump that I could think of.
INDY WEBMASTER:
indy?
BOOMER:
-Dusty Rhodes. I grew up watching Dusty and it simply amazed me of how he
controlled the crowd. The guy is definitely a legend and it would be awesome
to wrestle the American Dream.
INDY WEBMASTER:
wwf?
BOOMER:
-Ric Flair. I would like to be able to look back on my career and say that I
was lucky enough to wrestled one of the best wrestlers in history.
INDY WEBMASTER:
you are well known for taking vicious bumps from tables chairs etc
and for going out of your way to be as hardcore as possible . me
being a total hardcore fan myself loves to see these things but
what makes you enjoy doing them?
BOOMER:
-I had to search long and hard for me to find something that sets me apart
from everyone else. I am not 7 foot tall, I am not built like a brick shit
house, and I am definitely not an Adonis so I had to find out what would
serperate me from guys who are the before mentioned.
INDY WEBMASTER:
people such as mark madden have compared you to mick foley. i have
to agree.the question is did you set out to be known as a hardcore
foley type wrestler or did it just come about?
BOOMER:
-After watching King of the Ring '98, something just clicked inside of me.
Nobody was doing anything like that in Pittsburgh at the time and it kind of
felt like the thing to do. Even being mentioned in the same sentence as Mick
Foley means so much to me.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what do some wrestling fans need to respect about a pro wrestler
more than they do now?
BOOMER:
-I would have to say that everyone that is in the fed right now started where
all of us are today. They had pathetic matches and have blown many spots.
But they are very few of us in the indy's that make a living at wrestling.
People golf because they love it and we wrestle because we love it. It is
our way to escape the every day struggles of reality.
INDY WEBMASTER:
how has wrestling changed since you first started?
BOOMER:
-I have watched my progress from when I first started and there is a huge
evolvement. Wrestling changes about every five years. It has become faster
paced and harder hitting.
INDY WEBMASTER:
the internet has alot to do with wrestling these days. there is
alot of good and bad. do you think the internet is an overall good
or bad thing for wrestling?
BOOMER:
-If people use the internet as an informational highway then it is a positive
thing, but if it is used as a means of starting trouble and backstabbing
those you work with then there is no room for it.
INDY WEBMASTER:
speaking of the internet i heard you have a new website. what is
the address?
BOOMER:
BoomerPayne.tripod.com
INDY WEBMASTER:
how is it different from working a ecw legend like the sandman
compared to working a local indy wrestler?
BOOMER:
-I learned so much from wrestling Sandman that I could not even begin
describe the knowledge that he passed on. He has been to the dance and has
seen just about everything that you can only learn from him. But I learn
something new just about everytime I step into the ring with anyone.
INDY WEBMASTER:
would you rather be a fan favorite or have the fans against you.
BOOMER:
-It is always nice to be liked but I think that I am a natural heel.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what is your favorite part about being a wrestler?
BOOMER:
-Having the ability to control the emotions of true fans is a great feeling.
Making them laugh or making them want to see you get your ass handed to you.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what is the worst part about being a wrestler?
BOOMER:
-Waking up the morning after a match and having your eye swollen shut, your
back feeling like it is going to explode, your head is still bleeding, and
you can't remember what happened in the match.
INDY WEBMASTER:
i know you wife comes to see most of your matches. what is her
reaction when shes sees you being beatin with chairs and covered
in blood?
BOOMER:
-She hates the scars the most. I have asked her several times about what is
going through her mind when she watches one of my matches and her only reply
is that deep inside she is confident that I know what I am doing and I know
my limitations.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what offends you about wrestling today?
BOOMER:
-That lack of respect for professional wrestling. Some wrestlers, promoters,
and fans that just don't care about wrestling at all.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what would you like to see change about pro wrestling?
BOOMER:
-The interactions between the fans and the wrestlers outside of an event.
The fans have to much access to indy shows and it really hurts the business.
INDY WEBMASTER:
When you hang up the tights, how would you like to be remembered
as?
BOOMER:
-Someone that gave a hundred percent everytime I went out to the ring. No
matter if there was 4 people or 4,000 I never changed anything about my
wrestling style.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what would be the highlight of your career if you permanenty
retired today?
BOOMER:
-Having my finisher written about in a wrestling book. That was an honor to
have someone that I have never met write about me and my finsiher and ranking
it above HHH and Sting.
INDY WEBMASTER:
and who would your final oponient be?
BOOMER:
-I would like to wrestle Quinn Magnum in my final match. There is so much
history between the two of us. He has been such a huge part of my career
that I would like to end it all vs. Quinn.
INDY WEBMASTER:
since you left the pittsburgh area i know you took some time off,
but now that you are back in the ring in a different area what are
the differences of wrestling in pittsburgh compared to where you
are at now?
BOOMER:
-In Pittsburgh the pace is hard hitting, big bumps, weapons and blood. The
psychology is more geared towards the finish of the match. Here in the south
they go by the Bill Watts' 10 Commandments and the psychology is geared more
towards the wrestling during the match.
INDY WEBMASTER:
what federations can you be seen at?
BOOMER:
I have been working closely with American Pro Wrestling and Universal
Wrestling Alliance.
INDY WEBMASTER:
do you ever plan on returning to the pittsburgh wrestling scene?
BOOMER:
-Yes I would love to be able to come back and wrestle in Pittsburgh but not
for a while..
INDY WEBMASTER:
before you left pittsburgh you had your last match in iwc with
shirly doe for the iwc high stakes title. now normally when a
wrestler is leaving a federation they drop their title but in this
case you won the title and they retired it with you. the question
is what did it feel like to have iwc retire (what most would call
their most reconized title) the high stakes title as a tribute to
you ?
BOOMER:
-To be honest I did not even know that I had won the title until the referee
rang the bell. It was a complete and total shock to me. It was one of the
greatest feelings in the world to know that I was looked upon in that manner.
That the guys at IWC had that much respect for me and I will never forget
that moment for as long as I live.
INDY WEBMASTER:
one final question. what advice would you give to anybody that is
thinking about trying to become a pro wrestler?
BOOMER:
-If you are not prepared to give everything you have to professional
wrestling don't even try. I have seen so many people say that they always
wanted to become a wrestler but once they take their first bump they realize
just how difficult it is. It is one thing to like wrestling but to do it you
have to love it.
INDY WEBMASTER:I would like to now thank Boomer Payne for taking the time to do the first (of hopefully many)interviews on indywrestling.net. Good luck Boomer in your future in and out of the ring and im sure everybody will be awaiting your return to the Pittsburgh wrestling scene.
